Japan is administratively divided into 47 prefectures. Each prefecture has its own prefectural government and a directly elected governor. The Japanese government also officially gives the number as 47 prefectures. In Japanese, four different designations are used: Tokyo-to for Tokyo, Hokkaidō for Hokkaido, Kyoto-fu and Osaka-fu, plus 43 other -ken prefectures. Together they make up Japan’s 47 administrative units. Japan’s official e-government information lists these prefectures individually.
