History - Early modern period - Hanseatic League - Hanseatic Diets
In what year did the last general Diet of the historical Hanseatic League take place?
Correct!
The last general Diet of the historical Hanseatic League took place in Lübeck in 1669.
The last general Diet of the Hanseatic League took place in Lübeck in 1669. The Hanse was not suddenly “dissolved,” but by that time its importance as a political and economic league of cities had already greatly declined. Between 1358 and 1669, a total of 172 general Diets were held, 129 of them in Lübeck alone. The year 1764 is a particularly tricky wrong answer: in that year, the last Hanseatic kontor in Bergen was dissolved. For this reason, 1669 and 1764 are both often cited as important endpoints in Hanseatic history. The European Hansemuseum emphasizes, however, that the Hanse had neither a definite founding date nor one clearly defined end.
