Health and the human body - Medical basics - Hiccups
What happens in the body during a hiccup?
Correct!
During a hiccup, the diaphragm contracts involuntarily and abruptly. Shortly afterward, the vocal cords or the entrance to the larynx close quickly, producing the characteristic sound. Hiccups can begin without an obvious cause and usually stop on their own after a short time. Triggers such as eating quickly, carbonated drinks, or irritation of the diaphragm can make them more likely.
