What is a bonsai?
Bonsai is the traditional Japanese art of cultivating trees in small containers and keeping them permanently small through techniques such as pruning, shaping and controlled root growth. The aim is not simply to create the smallest possible tree, but a harmonious representation that looks like a mature tree in nature. A bonsai is therefore not a special dwarf-tree species. In principle, many tree and shrub species can be shaped as bonsai. What matters is years of care and deliberate shaping of the crown, branches and roots. Some important bonsai are decades or even centuries old and have been cared for across several generations. Bonsai is now one of Japan's established traditional arts.
