History - Mystery & unexplained events - Tunguska event - Siberia - Natural disasters
What most likely happened above Siberia's Tunguska region on the morning of 30 June 1908?
Correct!
Eyewitnesses reported a dazzling fireball, a tremendous explosion and a shock wave that knocked people down even far away. The celestial object probably did not reach the ground but burst several kilometers above Earth. An explosion of this kind in the atmosphere is called an airburst.
The shock wave is estimated to have flattened around 80 million trees across more than 2,000 square kilometers. No definitive impact crater was ever found, which is why the Tunguska event remained one of the great mysteries of the 20th century for so long.
