Geography - Regions and continents - Greek mythology - Historical geography
Where is the name “Europe” traditionally said to come from?
Correct!
The name of our continent is traditionally linked to Europa in Greek mythology. Europa was a Phoenician princess who, according to the myth, was carried to Crete by Zeus in the form of a bull. Her name was also used geographically in antiquity and eventually became the name of the continent. However, the word’s actual linguistic origin remains uncertain. Several etymological theories exist, and the ancient historian Herodotus already doubted that the continent was simply named after the mythological Europa.
