Animals - Nature records - Quokka populations - Marsupials
Which Australian island is home to the world's largest wild quokka population?
Correct!
Rottnest Island (Wadjemup), off the coast of Western Australia, is home to the world's largest wild quokka population. The small marsupials occur across almost the entire island. The name “Rottnest” arose because Dutch explorers in the seventeenth century mistook the animals for large rats and called the island something like “rat's nest.” A small quokka population also lives on the mainland in southwestern Western Australia.
Rottnest Island has the largest quokka subpopulation, although estimates vary with season and survey.
