Which Italian scientist developed the first electric battery around 1800?
The Italian physicist Alessandro Volta developed the so-called voltaic column around 1800, which is considered the first electric battery. For the first time, it enabled the continuous generation of electrical current through chemical reactions. The voltaic column consisted of alternately arranged disks of different metals - especially copper and zinc - between which there was material soaked in a conductive liquid. Volta's invention was a crucial step in the development of electrical engineering and enabled numerous new experiments with electric current. Particularly fitting: The unit of electrical voltage, the volt, was later named after Alessandro Volta.
