Why do wolves howl?
Correct!
Wolves howl mainly to communicate with one another over long distances. Howling can help them find separated pack members, coordinate social activities, or signal to other packs that a territory is occupied. The National Park Service also describes howling before and after a hunt and as a possible alarm signal. The widespread idea that wolves howl at the Moon is a myth. Raising the head often helps them project the call so it can be heard far away. According to Yellowstone National Park, wolf calls can be heard across roughly 16 kilometers in open areas.
Howling serves communication within the pack, territorial advertising, and coordination of social activities.
