Why is the film award called the “Oscar”?
Correct!
The origin of the nickname “Oscar” is not definitively known. The best-known story says that Academy librarian Margaret Herrick saw the statuette and remarked that it reminded her of her “Uncle Oscar.” The Academy itself describes this as a popular story, not an established fact. The trophy’s official name is the Academy Award of Merit. The nickname was already widely used by 1934, when Hollywood columnist Sidney Skolsky used it publicly, and the Academy adopted it officially in 1939.
