Yrden creates a magical trap on the ground. When a wraith enters its area of effect, it is partly forced into the material world. Geralt can then wound it with his silver sword. The sign is therefore especially effective against nightwraiths and noonwraiths.
The five basic witcher signs are Aard, Axii, Igni, Quen and Yrden. They work like simplified spells that witchers can cast quickly with one hand, even in the middle of combat.
