Dinosaurs & Prehistory - Other prehistoric animals - Smilodon - Ice Age megafauna
Smilodon is often called a “saber-toothed tiger.” Why is that name scientifically inaccurate?
Correct!
Smilodon was not a tiger species. It belonged to an extinct line of saber-toothed cats and was not closely related to modern tigers.
Its long upper canine teeth were especially striking. Many Smilodon fossils are known from the La Brea Tar Pits.
