Dinosaurs & Prehistory - Other prehistoric animals - Carbonemys - Prehistoric life - Reptiles - Paleocene
What other giant reptile did Carbonemys share its habitat with?
Correct!
Carbonemys cofrinii was a massive freshwater turtle from the Paleocene. It lived around 58 to 60 million years ago in what is now northern Colombia. Fossils of Carbonemys come from the Cerrejón Formation. The Florida Museum of Natural History explains that this very large turtle was found in the same rocks as Titanoboa, the largest snake known to date. This creates an impressive picture of this tropical ecosystem shortly after the end of the non-avian dinosaurs: huge turtles, huge snakes and other large reptiles lived side by side in the warm wetlands.
Carbonemys lived in the Paleocene in what is now Colombia and shared the Cerrejón landscape with Titanoboa.
