What is a geisha traditionally?
A geisha is a professionally trained Japanese entertainer. Her training includes traditional arts such as dance, singing, music, tea ceremony and refined conversation. The Japan National Tourism Organization describes geisha accordingly as artists who entertain guests with traditional performances and conversation. The word geisha (芸者) broadly means “person of the arts”. In Kyoto, fully trained geisha are usually called geiko. A geisha in training there is called a maiko. A common misconception is to equate geisha with prostitutes or courtesans. In fact, they are professional artists whose work is based on mastery of traditional Japanese entertainment arts.
