What is an omamori in Japan?
Omamori (お守り) are traditional Japanese protective and good-luck amulets, especially available at Shinto shrines and Buddhist temples. They often take the form of a small, colorful cloth pouch. There are omamori for many different wishes and life situations, such as health, exam success, traffic safety, family wellbeing, business success or protection from misfortune. Traditionally, the cloth pouch is not opened. Inside is a blessed or inscribed element made of paper or wood. Many people carry their omamori with them or attach it to a bag. Omamori should not be confused with omikuji: an omikuji is a paper fortune that contains a prediction about one's luck or future.
