Which brothers developed the aircraft with which the first successful controlled powered flights were achieved in 1903?
After several years of flying kites and gliders, Wilbur Wright and Orville Wright developed the Wright Flyer in 1903. The Smithsonian describes it as the first powered aircraft to achieve sustained, controlled flight with a pilot on board. On December 17, 1903, Orville Wright took off from Kitty Hawk in North Carolina for the first successful flight. It lasted 12 seconds and covered about 36 meters (120 feet). In total, Wilbur Wright and Orville Wright completed four successful powered flights that day. On the fourth and longest flight, Wilbur Wright piloted the Flyer for around 59 seconds over approximately 852 feet (260 meters). Other aviation pioneers had previously done important groundbreaking work, but the Wright brothers' flights of 1903 are generally considered to be the beginning of successful powered, controlled, sustained aircraft flight.
