History - Ancient history - Pyramids - Kingdom of Kush
Which country has the most pyramids in the world?
Correct!
It is not Egypt but Sudan that has the most surviving ancient pyramids. More than 200 Nubian pyramids stand in present-day Sudan, many in former centers of the Kingdom of Kush such as Meroë and Nuri. They were built mainly as tombs for Kushite rulers and members of the elite and are generally smaller and steeper than the famous Egyptian pyramids. National Geographic confirms that more than 200 pyramids survive in Sudan, more than in Egypt. The archaeological sites of Meroë are also a UNESCO World Heritage site and document the importance of the Kingdom of Kush from the eighth century BCE to the fourth century CE.
The Nubian pyramids were mainly tombs for rulers and the elite of the Kingdom of Kush.
