Which pharaoh commissioned the monumental rock-cut temples at Abu Simbel?
Correct!
Ramesses II commissioned the monumental rock-cut temples at Abu Simbel.
The famous temples of Abu Simbel in southern Egypt were carved from the rock in the 13th century BCE under Ramesses II. Four enormous seated statues of the pharaoh, each about 21 meters high, stand in front of the Great Temple. The site also has a remarkable modern history: construction of the Aswan High Dam threatened to flood the temples. In an international UNESCO rescue campaign, they were dismantled in the 1960s and rebuilt at a higher location.
