Travel and landmarks - Landmarks and buildings - Arc de Triomphe - Paris - Napoleon I - Triumphal arches
Why did Napoleon I have the Arc de Triomphe built in Paris?
Correct!
After his victory in the Battle of Austerlitz in 1805, Napoleon I wanted to create a monumental monument for his soldiers. On February 18, 1806, he ordered an imperial decree to build a triumphal arch in honor of the Grande Armée. The western end of the Champs-Élysées was ultimately chosen as the location. However, Napoleon did not live to see its completion: after several political interruptions, the Arc de Triomphe was not completed until 1836.
