Animals - Cats - Cat behavior
Why do cats purr?
Correct!
Cats often purr when they are content and relaxed, but purring is not conclusive evidence of this. Cats may also purr when stressed, frightened, ill, or in pain, so the sound must be interpreted together with their body language and the situation.
Purring also serves communication. Mothers and kittens use it during nursing; adult cats may express social closeness or soothe themselves. Its exact purpose is not yet fully understood. The claim that cats purr only because they are happy is therefore only partly true. Unusually frequent purring together with a change in behavior may indicate a health problem.
