Animals - Cats - Cat vocalizations
Why do cats meow?
Correct!
Meowing in domestic cats is particularly closely linked to communication with humans. Adult cats meow at one another relatively rarely and rely more on body language, scent, and other vocalizations when interacting with other cats. With people, however, they meow very frequently.
A meow can ask for attention or food, serve as a greeting, or express another need. Cats also learn which sounds trigger a response from their humans, so communication can develop differently in each household. Kittens meow to their mothers; as they mature, typical meowing is directed mostly at people. Adult cats can still communicate with one another through sounds and may occasionally meow, so saying that they never do so would be too absolute.
