Why do cats so often land on their feet?
Correct!
Cats have a pronounced righting reflex. Their balance organs provide information about body position, while they can rotate the front and rear parts of the body partly independently and orient themselves during a fall.
The reflex develops in young cats, but it does not mean that falls are always harmless. The tail can help with balance, yet it is not essential for orienting the body in the air.
