Why do some dogs eat feces?

Eating feces is called coprophagia. In dogs it can be a natural or learned behavior, especially in puppies and in animals with strong exploratory or scavenging behavior.
Habit, boredom, stress, or attention can play a role. A vitamin deficiency is not automatically the cause, although medical problems are possible. If an adult dog suddenly starts doing this or does it very frequently, a veterinary examination is appropriate.
