Travel and landmarks - Landmarks and buildings - Bavaria - Ludwig II - Castles and palaces
What was Neuschwanstein Castle originally called?
Correct!
King Ludwig II initially referred to his building project as the “New Hohenschwangau Castle”. Today's castle was built in 1869 above Hohenschwangau Castle, where Ludwig II spent part of his childhood. What is surprising is that the castle was only given the name “Neuschwanstein” after the death of Ludwig II in 1886. The king himself did not know his most famous castle by the name by which it is known worldwide today.
Neuschwanstein Castle was originally called “Neue Burg Hohenschwangau”.
