History - Prehistory and early history - Machu Picchu - Peru - Andes
Which civilization built the famous mountain city of Machu Picchu in present-day Peru?
Correct!
Machu Picchu was built by the Inca in the fifteenth century. The site lies at about 2,430 metres in the Peruvian Andes and consists of temples, residences, terraces, and plazas. It was probably created during the reign of the Inca ruler Pachacuti. After the Spanish conquest, Machu Picchu was largely forgotten outside the region. The site became internationally known especially through the 1911 expedition of the American Hiram Bingham. Today, Machu Picchu is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
The site forms part of the Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu and combines spectacular mountain scenery with exceptionally preserved architecture. Its terraces served, among other purposes, agriculture and the stabilization of the steep slopes.
