Animals - Animal types and traits - Cats - Cat behavior
Why do cats purr not only when they are content?
Correct!
Cats often purr when they are relaxed and satisfied, but purring is not exclusively a sign of well-being. Cats can also purr when they are stressed, in pain, ill, or injured.
Kittens already purr while nursing and communicate with their mother this way. Science has not fully established why cats purr in difficult situations; a soothing or self-regulating function is one possibility.
