What is traditional Japanese archery called?
Kyudo is the traditional Japanese art of archery. The name broadly means “way of the bow”. The discipline developed from older forms of Japanese archery and was historically closely connected with samurai training. Kyudo is not only about hitting the target. Posture, breathing, concentration and a precisely defined sequence of movements are also highly important. JNTO describes the hassetsu, the fixed phases, postures and techniques of Japanese archery. Another characteristic feature is the yumi, the traditional Japanese longbow. It is strikingly asymmetrical: the grip sits clearly below the center of the bow. Yabusame, by contrast, is a special form of traditional horseback archery and is therefore not the answer to the general question about the Japanese art of archery.
Kyudo is the traditional Japanese art of archery and combines technique, posture and concentration.
