Which German engineer developed the Patent Motorwagen, which is considered the first practical automobile?
Carl Benz developed a vehicle in Mannheim that was designed from the outset as an independent motor vehicle and was not just a motorized horse-drawn carriage. On January 29, 1886, he registered his “vehicle with a gas engine” at the Imperial Patent Office. The patent was given the number DRP 37435. Today this document is considered so important for the history of technology that it was included in the UNESCO Memory of the World program. UNESCO describes it as a document of global importance for the beginning of individual motorized mobility. The Benz Patent Motor Car had three wheels and was powered by an internal combustion engine. Mercedes-Benz describes the original vehicle from 1886 as the world's first automobile. At the same time, however, Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach were also working on motorized vehicles. In 1886, Daimler installed a high-speed internal combustion engine in a carriage. That's why the precise formulation about the Benz Patent Motor Car is better than the simplified statement that just one person invented the entire automobile on his own.
