Lactose, also called milk sugar, is a disaccharide made of the two simple sugars glucose and galactose. It is the main carbohydrate in milk and is also found in many dairy products. In the small intestine, lactose is normally split by the enzyme lactase into glucose and galactose, which can then be absorbed.
